Same Day Crowns Q & A

What are same-day crowns?

At First Impression Dental Fresno, Dr. Lent uses the state-of-the-art CEREC Primescan AC machine for the entire process of designing and crafting your crown. The process is fast enough to take place in just one appointment. Same day crowns are dental crowns with fewer steps, fewer appointments, and more comfort throughout the process of getting them. They function the same as traditional crowns, covering up teeth that have extensive damage or decay. Dr. Lent can also design them to fit onto your dental implants.

Why do I need a same-day crown?

Same day crowns are fast and convenient. They save you time if you need a crown for any reason. Crowns can protect or reinforce teeth that:

  • You also need a crown if you have a dental implant to fill the gap and cover the top of the implant. Same-day crowns look indistinguishable from your original healthy teeth. Are broken or cracked
  • Support a dental bridge
  • Have a filling that needs support
  • Had a root canal

What is the process for getting same-day crowns?

Dr. Lent begins the process by removing some enamel from your tooth to make room for the crown. Then, he takes a digital impression of the shape of the prepared tooth and uses the scans and measurements to design your crown on a computer.

The CEREC machine takes just a few minutes right in the office to mill your new crown from a block of ceramic. Dr. Lent matches the ceramic to the shade of your natural teeth.

Once your crown is ready, Dr. Lent checks its fit before cementing it into place. Like other crowns, same-day crowns can last for 25 years or more as long as you protect and care for your teeth.

How are the impressions taken for my same-day crowns?

With CEREC, you don’t need to fill your mouth with plaster or another gooey material to give Dr. Lent a detailed impression of your teeth. Using CEREC’s computer-aided design and manufacturing (CAD/CAM) technology, he can obtain detailed 3D images of the tooth that needs a crown and the structures surrounding it.

Dr. Lent simply scans your teeth with an intraoral camera that fits more comfortably in your mouth than traditional impression material.
